Earth Day šŸŒŽ

Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day brings together individuals worldwide, from all walks of life, to advocate for climate action and the preservation of our planet.Ā

This year, Earth Day's theme,Ā Planet vs. Plastics, underscores the urgent need for collective action to combat plastic pollution. The goal is ambitious: a boldĀ 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040.Ā

Here at Ocean Bottle, our mission is clear. To bring people together to turn the tide on ocean plastic pollution. We are proud of the work we do to reduce plastic consumption but we know that itā€™s only a drop in the ocean.Ā

Earth Day elevates this message by raising awareness on the need for better, more impactful action on climate change.Ā

This years theme Planet vs. PlasticsĀ emphasises several critical points:

1. Raising awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic on human health is paramount. Research transparency is crucial, and EARTHDAY.ORGā„¢ highlight this in their recent paper,Ā Babies vs. Plastic. Shockingly, microplastics have been found to bioaccumulate in major organs, have been detected in the human placenta and even infiltrated breast milk, posing serious health risks.

2. We must advocate for the phased-out use of single-use plastics by 2030. EARTHDAY.ORGā„¢ is pushing for the commitment to be embedded in theĀ United Nations Global Plastic Treaty on Plastic Pollution 2024.

3. Raising awareness about the detrimental impact of fast fashion on microplastic pollution is essential. Synthetic materials used in clothing contribute significantly to this problem.

4. The theme calls for investment in innovative technologies to develop sustainable alternatives to plastic. Material innovation holds the key to reducing our reliance on plastic and mitigating its environmental impact.

So, how can you get involved?

  • Sign theĀ EDO Global Plastics Treaty petition, advocating for the 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040.
  • Try theĀ Plastic Detox Challenge, and reduce your use of single-use plastics in your daily life. Saying no to plastic bags, straws, water bottles, and other disposable items can help us incorporate new habits into our daily lives.
  • Take a read on the impact of plastic on ocean health by reading Earth Day Org's educational page:Ā Plastic in the Ocean.

Together we can turn the tide on plastic pollution šŸŒŠ
